An Evening of Edible Art - Wanderlust Wednesday Link Up

Tonight my friend Chelsea and I headed out to downtown Bothell to partake in some edible art.  We signed up for a 90 minute chocolate molding class at Dawn's Candy & Cake.  I previously purchased a Living Social deal for this and finally signed up.  It was a bit intimidating at first, because we were the only two at the class.  The instructor gave us a quick tutorial and then sent us to pick our mold.
Chelsea selected a genie’s lamp mold and I picked crabs, of course.

The chocolates were the melting chocolate variety, which are easily microwaveable.  If you want higher quality chocolates, you have to temper.  This chocolate is damn good quality for this shop’s lowest quality chocolate.  They kept these dispensers submersed in a warm water bath so they remain melted and flow-able.  The three varieties were milk, dark and white chocolate and then they used oil based food coloring to dye the white to blue, yellow, green, purple, pink, orange and red.  The instructor emphasized the use of oil based food dyes.  You want to avoid getting water in the molds and the chocolate.  The regular food coloring you get at the store is water based so don’t use it.  They supplied several lids that were cut at different levels to provide large to fine openings depending on what you were going for.  Also, there were q-tips, mini-straws, and toothpicks available to help with the design.

I’m so happy with how easy these were to make and how great they turned out.  They even provided us with edible glitter to add as a final touch.  You basically do each layer, let it cool (they had a drink refrigerator) and then continue on.  We were even offered caramel to add as a filling, yummy!  The sticks were super easy to add, you just put them in while the chocolate is wet, spin to coat and then cool it off.  They pop easily out of the mold.

Chelsea’s genie lamps turned out incredible!  They were quite hefty, so they took quite a while to cool.  In the meantime she experimented with these adorable salmon.  Not to brag, but the chocolate and mint colored one was my idea,  he he.  We learned that if something breaks upon removal, you just perform chocolate surgery and it’s all fixed!  Loved that.
We got to keep our molds.  I think we are going to purchase some supplies and have a chocolate molding party for Christmas.
Afterwards, Chelsea and I had sushi at one of the local restaurants; it was to die for.  The evening was amazing!  Chelsea and I crack each other up, which makes Tuesday evenings memorable.
The evening continued to be excellent; when I got home my Birchbox was awaiting me.  It is a beautiful sight!  I just ran out of face wash and amazingly enough, there is a huge sample of a brightening cleanser.  I will be trying out the DDF Brightening Cleanser in the morning.  I’m also thrilled to try out the perfume, Viva La Juicy La Fleur.  I’m shopping for a new scent.  I can’t wait to try out all of these products and let you all know what is worthwhile for a full size purchase.  I have to say thanks to Desirae for turning me onto the Birchbox.  She’s an amazing gal and a coupon goddess, check her out at Dez Deals on Facebook.

    2. Oh and I just realized that everybody gets different stuff, based on their beauty profile. So two of my friends have them and it's so fun to compare.
